Wood

Real Wood shutters are most commonly chosen when a client wants a beautiful stain wood grain look to match existing wood trim around a window.  Real Wood is also almost exclusively used when making specialty shapes such as circles, hexagons, arches, trapezoids, and so on.  Real Wood is also the best choice when utilizing remote control operating systems for windows that are higher up and hard to reach.  Yet another perfect application for Real Wood is doors; sliding glass doors, doors with knob handles, doors with lever handles, etc. as the shutters can be made with bi-fold or by-pass systems for sliders and done with cutouts to get around the various knobs and handles on regular and french doors.

Composite

Composite Shutters are by far the most popular type making up approximately 60% of overall shutter sales.  This is due to the relatively low cost along with the large variety of options that are available.  Composite gives the look and feel of real wood while providing significant savings over the cost of real wood.  They are perfect for 80% of the windows in your home.  The only areas where you would want to look at other options such as Vinyl or Real Wood would be garages or some speciality shapes and when utilizing remote control options on your shutters.

Vinyl

The most common applications for Vinyl shutters are areas of high moisture content such as bathrooms and especially garages.  You can also get a large vaiety of sizes in arch shapes that compliment regular windows when covering an arch top window.  Vinyl is the easiest to clean which is especially important in garage applications where they are exposed to much more dirt and dust than inside a house. The ability to lift the panels right off the frame, without any tools, and literally hose them off, makes Vinyl an excellent choice for garage or bathroom areas.
